What is Chiropractic?

The word, Chiropractic, comes from the two Greek words, Kheiro - hand and praktikos - practical. Which translates as “done by hand”. Chiropractic is a non invasive hands-on therapy that focuses on the health and function of the spine and nervous system.

Who are Chiropractors?

Chiropractors are one of only seven classes of regulated health care professionals that are able to use the title ‘doctor’ in the province of Ontario. Prior to attending chiropractic college, chiropractors must have completed a undergraduate university degree. After completing an undergraduate degree, chiropractors complete four years of study at an accredited Chiropractic University / College receiving more than 4200 hours of specialized clinical hands-on training. Upon completion of the chiropractic curriculum, eligible individuals write national licensing examinations in order to become fully licensed to practice.

Chiropractors are trained to treat acute, chronic muscular skeletal neurological pain, as well as prescribe therapeutic exercise, and recommend rehabilitation and injury prevention strategies.

These needles are hardly felt as they are inserted and are left in place for about 15 to 20 minutes. Most patients fall asleep, due to its incredibly relaxing effect.

Studies suggest that acupuncture produces its effects through regulating the nervous system, which aids in the activity of natural pain-killing biochemicals such as endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites in the body. In addition, studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones and, thus, affecting the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions.

There are other situations – were acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an alternative to pain management.
